After numerous barrel samples of his fine Rieslings, we came to the red wine. Exactly one single barrique barrel stood before us - the essence of the 2020 Spätburgunder harvest! And as the first taste unfolded in the glass, it was immediately clear that Stefan Müller had marked a new milestone in the winery's hitherto not-so-illustrious red wine history. The wine presented itself as dense, finely aromatic and complex with the finest tannins, good bite and great drinkability. Quality that, unlike the only Spätburgunder Réserve vintage 2018, was based not primarily on power and exuberant concentration, but on finesse and precision. And so, a year later, we again circled this one barrique barrel and were thrilled with how the wine had developed. But how could one barrique of this fine Pinot suffice for the whole world...? At the beginning of October, the grapes were, of course, hand-picked and then processed with particular care: whole-bunch pressing, spontaneous fermentation until early January, followed by full lees aging and 12 months of lees aging in the bottle according to the traditional method (Méthode Traditionnelle).
