Saarburg is a highlight not only because of its Old Town, the waterfall, and the nearby Saar loop – the region is also one of Germany's most exciting Riesling origins. If you are looking for wineries in Saarburg and the surrounding area, you will find an exceptional mix of world-renowned VDP estates, charming family culture, and modern wine experience architecture – often with wine tasting, cellar tours, and a fantastic view of the Saar Valley.
In this article, you will get a curated overview of the most important wineries around Saarburg – including specific visiting tips.
Why Saarburg is so special for wine lovers
The Saar is Riesling country: steep slate slopes, cool nights, and long growing seasons ensure precise, mineral wines – from crisp dry to noble sweet. Around Saarburg, you'll also find one of the region's most famous vineyards: Saarburger Rausch. Perfect for anyone who wants to combine wine & enjoyment with a weekend trip.
1) Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken (Saarburg) – VDP icon with a worldwide reputation
The Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken winery is a member of the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP) and is considered by many to be the top address in Saarburg. What the Zilliken family has built over eleven generations combines international prestige with down-to-earth family winery charm.
A true experience is the historic winery cellar, which many visitors consider one of the most beautiful cellars of all and, in our opinion, should be included in the UNESCO World Heritage! Wine tastings & cellar tours are possible by telephone appointment.
2) Weingut Dr. Wagner (Saarburg) – closed since 2025!
The VDP winery Dr. Wagner is conveniently located near Saarburg train station and is known for its large wooden barrel cellar. The picturesque estate park and the opportunity to taste Saar wines in a relaxed atmosphere made it a popular destination for a long time. The holiday apartments were also considered a good starting point for tours along the Saar.
Important note: The winery has unfortunately been closed since 2025. We deeply regret the loss of this traditional establishment, with which we have worked since day 1, and wish Christiane Wagner and her family all the best for the future!
3) Weingut Appel (Saarburg-Niederleuken) – Affordable Saar wines & group tastings
If you are looking for affordable, well-made Saar wines, Weingut Appel in the Saarburg district of Niederleuken is the right place. Winemaker Armin Appel is for many the sympathetic point of contact when it comes to uncomplicated and affordable options.
Particularly practical: In the tasting room, larger groups are also well catered for – ideal if you are traveling with friends, a club, or colleagues. The focus is, among other things, on the world-renowned vineyard Saarburger Rausch. Wine tastings by telephone appointment.
4) Weingut Van Volxem (near Saarburg) – Modern winery & vinothek without prior appointment
Just a few minutes' drive from Saarburg lies Van Volxem – known for one of Europe's most modern wineries. Particularly pleasant for spontaneous visitors: In the stylish vinothek, you can taste the wines at any time and without prior appointment.
There's also a real feel-good factor: On the terrace with a view over the old Saar arm, you can wonderfully relax with a glass of Saar Riesling. Cellar tours are possible by telephone appointment.
Ideal for: Anyone who loves wine architecture, wants to taste spontaneously, or has guests who want to see something "wow".
5) Schloss Saarstein (Serrig near Saarburg) – Winery with panoramic views of the Saar Valley
In Serrig, upstream from Saarburg, Schloss Saarstein towers above the village – a winery straight out of a picture book. Located on the edge of the Saarburg Kammerforst, you can enjoy a unique view of the Saar Valley from the terrace.
Estate owner Christian Ebert is happy to welcome guests for wine tasting by telephone appointment. Anyone who wants to combine wine and scenery will be very happy here.
Tip: Combine your visit with a stroll or a short hike – the view is part of the experience.
