Saar Auction Wines – The best Saar Rieslings at the legendary Prädikatswein auction in Trier!
For over 100 years, the best Rieslings from the Saar region have been auctioned at the traditional Prädikatswein auction in Trier, which always takes place in mid-September. The organizer is the so-called "Grosse Ring", an association of top winemakers founded in 1908, from which the later VDP.Mosel-Saar-Ruwer emerged. Traditionally, only sweet Prädikatsweins were auctioned, but since the 132nd Prädikatswein auction in 2019, the dry VDP.GROSSE GEWÄCHSE wines have also been auctioned. New world records are regularly set at the auction. For example, the bottles of Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 2003, auctioned in 2015, with a net value of €12,000, still hold the record for the most expensive wine ever brought to market in a 0.75l bottle!
Basically, the treasures offered there are the best barrels of a vintage, i.e. wines that stand out from the other wines in the range due to their special aroma and their extraordinary aging potential. The auction is open to everyone and all auction wines can be tasted on the morning before the auction and during the so-called "wet auction" at noon. The attendees do not bid themselves, but commission one of the auctioneers, who bids on the desired wines on their behalf.
