Saar Winzer Sekt – Sparkling pleasure with a great history!

Saar Winzer Sekt enjoyed a similar reputation to the sparkling wines of Champagne during the heyday of Saar wine about 100 years ago.

The production of sparkling wine has a long tradition in the Saar region. The best sparkling wines are made from the Riesling grape variety using the classic bottle fermentation method. The base wines often mature for several months or even years on the lees in the bottle before being freshly disgorged and released to the market. Saar Riesling Brut sparkling wines impress with their fruity, refreshing taste and are excellent as an aperitif or with food. A special feature are the Réserve sparkling wines from the Peter Lauer winery. These mature for 30 years or more on the lees in the cool cellar of the winery and are always freshly disgorged before being released to the market. They have an extraordinary aroma, comparable to my fresh sparkling wine, and with their pronounced salty and nutty aromas, they are reminiscent of an Islay whisky. They are the perfect accompaniment to smoked dishes.

Winemaker's sparkling wine
Winzersekt is a premium variant of sparkling wine, produced by winemakers themselves and meeting the highest quality standards. Unlike industrially produced sparkling wine, Winzersekt is characterized by craftsmanship and individuality. Winemakers carefully select grapes grown in their own vineyards and process them into sparkling wine using traditional methods. A special feature of Winzersekt is the use of high-quality base wines, mostly from classic grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, or Riesling. Careful selection and gentle processing result in sparkling wines of high quality and finesse. Winzersekt often undergoes a longer aging period on the yeast, leading to fine bubbles and complex aromas. Winzersekt is produced using the traditional method, also known as bottle fermentation. The second fermentation takes place in the bottle, giving the sparkling wine its fine bubbles. After a maturation period on the yeast, the sparkling wine is disgorged and possibly dosed to achieve the desired taste. Winzersekt stands for enjoyment at the highest level and is an excellent alternative to Champagne.

What types of sparkling wine are there?
The world of sparkling wine offers an impressive variety of styles and flavors. Here are some of the most important types of sparkling wine that connoisseurs can explore:

1.
Winzersekt (winemaker's sparkling wine): This sparkling wine is handcrafted by winemakers and emphasizes the uniqueness of the regional grapes and terroir. The bottle fermentation gives it a fine sparkle and complex aromas.

2.
Crémant: A French sparkling wine produced outside of Champagne. Crémant is made using the traditional method and can originate from various wine regions, such as Alsace, the Loire Valley, or Burgundy. Furthermore, Luxembourgish Crémant is known beyond the borders of the Grand Duchy, and Crémant is also produced in German wine-growing regions.

3.
Champagne: The most famous member of the sparkling wine family comes from Champagne in France. Champagne is made exclusively from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes and is subject to strict production regulations.

4.
Prosecco: An Italian sparkling wine made from the Glera grape. Prosecco is known for its freshness, lightness, and fruity aromas. Unlike Champagne, the second fermentation takes place in pressure tanks.

6.

The selection of sparkling wines allows connoisseurs to find the right sparkling wine for every occasion. From the elegance of Champagne to the refreshing lightness of Prosecco – the world of sparkling wine is rich in enjoyment.
What is meant by degorging?
Dégorgement is a crucial step in the production of sparkling wine, particularly in the traditional method of bottle fermentation, often used for high-quality sparkling wines and Champagne. The term "dégorgement" comes from French and means something like "to uncork". The process of dégorgement takes place after the second fermentation in the bottle, where yeast and sediment remain in the neck of the bottle. To remove these residues and clarify the sparkling wine, the neck of the bottle is briefly frozen. Then the bottle is opened, and the pressure inside the bottle forces the frozen yeast deposits out. After dégorgement, the sparkling wine is topped up with a dosage, a mixture of wine and sugar that influences the taste and sweetness of the sparkling wine. The bottle is then sealed with a cork and wire cage. Dégorgement is a crucial step that not only ensures the clarity of the sparkling wine but also enables the dosage process to achieve the desired flavor profile of the final product. This step requires precision and experience to ensure that the sparkling wine achieves its highest quality and brilliance.
What is a Crémant sparkling wine?
Crémant sparkling wine – elegance and sophistication in every sip. The term "Crémant" stands for fine sparkling wine from France, produced using the Méthode Traditionnelle. This elaborate process ensures natural fermentation in the bottle and gives Crémant its fine bubbles and elegant character. Unlike Champagne, Crémant comes from various wine regions of France, such as the Loire Valley, Alsace, Burgundy, and Provence. The use of regional grape varieties gives each Crémant its unique aromas and nuances. Popular grape varieties include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Chenin Blanc, and others.
What is the difference between a Crémant and a Sekt?
The difference between Crémant and Sekt lies in their origin and production standards. Crémant is a protected designation for high-quality sparkling wines from France that are produced outside the Champagne region. In contrast, Sekt is a general designation for sparkling wines that can be produced in various wine regions and countries.

1. Origin:

Crémant: Crémant is produced exclusively in certain French wine regions outside of Champagne. Each region has its own grape varieties and production standards for Crémant.

Sparkling wine (Sekt): Sparkling wine can be produced worldwide and is not limited to a specific region. There is German Sekt, Austrian Sekt, Spanish Cava, and many other varieties.

2. Grape varieties:

Crémant: The grape varieties for Crémant vary depending on the region, but can include grapes such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chenin Blanc.

Sparkling wine: The grape varieties for sparkling wine are diverse and can vary depending on the origin. In Germany, for example, Riesling is often used, while in Spain Xarello, Macabeo and Parellada are used for Cava.

3. Manufacturing standards:

Crémant: Crémant is produced using the traditional method, in which the second fermentation takes place in the bottle. This method is demanding and gives the Crémant its fine bubbles and complex aroma.

Sparkling wine (Sekt): Sparkling wine can be produced using various methods, including traditional bottle fermentation, tank fermentation, or CO2 injection. The quality and flavor can vary depending on the production method.
Overall, Crémant is known for its elegance and sophistication, while Sekt covers a wide range of styles and flavors. Both can serve as celebratory drinks, but Crémant stands out due to its specific regional characteristics and production standards.
Is Crémant sparkling wine or Champagne?
Crémant is neither sparkling wine nor Champagne, but a distinct category of high-quality sparkling wines from France. The term "Crémant" refers to French sparkling wines produced outside the Champagne region that meet certain quality standards. In contrast, sparkling wine and Champagne are separate categories with their own production rules and regions of origin.
