Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese 2024 is a stunning Riesling masterpiece, almost beyond words!
2024 was a year of extremes on the Saar. The devastating late frosts in mid-April and the subsequent warm and humid weather drastically decimated the harvest. The few remaining berries were then quite stable, and it took a high degree of risk to wait for the development of botrytis, so prized for sweet wines. But who, if not Riesling Pope Egon Müller, would be willing to accept further yield losses despite an already tiny harvest, just to extract the maximum potential from a vintage? So he gambled on the chance of finding noble rot berries at the end of the harvest. And his courage was rewarded. After rain in mid-October ensured widespread botrytis infection, the weather turned at the end of October, allowing the affected berries to dry out. The experienced picking team meticulously and calmly selected the perfectly shriveled berries in the vineyard with the utmost precision. Yield per picker: just one bucket of dried berries a day! However, this immense effort paid off, as the golden-yellow juice, dripping thickly from the basket press, already promised greatness. A quick test with the must hydrometer then confirmed it: off the charts – Trockenbeerenauslese quality! The must was then spontaneously fermented in traditional fuder barrels in the cool cellar at Scharzhof. The result is a wine that initially leaves you speechless and provides the best proof of why these wines have enjoyed legendary status for more than 100 years.
Initially, the wine presents itself as reserved and introverted. But with a little time and air, an impressive aromatic spectacle unfolds: A deep, fascinatingly complex fragrance opens the experience – exotic, yet precise and clearly defined. Ripe mango, papaya, baby pineapple, kumquat, and a hint of passion fruit combine with notes of raisins, dates, and figs. Beneath lies a refreshing minty-herbaceous interplay of aromas, supported by a cool, smoky slate note that holds everything together like a deep bass. On the palate, the wine ignites a fireworks display of the senses: incredibly vibrant, electrifying, and of impressive precision. The texture is silky and noble, everything appears seamless – harmonious, refined, and with noble balance. The excellent acidity masterfully balances the generous sweetness, literally pushing it aside and revealing a piquant, salty, slaty minerality that gives the wine depth and length. The finish seems endless – an echo of fruit, stone, and light. This Auslese is nothing less than an essence of Scharzhofberg: clear, yellow-fruited, structured, and with majestic tranquility. A great wine of century-old stature that will outlive us – and can stand alongside the greatest wines this legendary winery has produced.

The clear crystals in your wine are tartrate crystals. These crystals form through the crystallization of potassium bitartrate, a natural component of wine that can form during the aging process. Tartrate crystals are completely harmless and do not affect the taste or quality of the wine. You can simply let the crystals settle and pour carefully, or remove them by decanting.
