About the wine

Van Volxem Alte Reben Riesling dry 2023 - Estate wine benchmark from Grand Cru vineyards!

The top wine from Van Volxem's estate wine segment rightly bears its name, because it has always been produced exclusively from grapes from vines at least 60 to 120 years old, mostly self-rooted. Here, one can rightly speak of old vines! The vines are mainly located in vineyards such as the Wiltinger Klosterberg, Kanzemer Sonnenberg and Wawerner Ritterpfad, however, depending on the vintage, there are always partial batches of graded Große Gewächse, e.g. from the newly added Ayler Kupp or the Ockfener Bockstein. We are talking about extremely good starting material in the estate wine segment, because these old vines produce small, loosely clustered and therefore highly aromatic grapes, which are the basis for this outstanding estate wine. These are, of course, hand-picked and then spontaneously fermented in large wooden barrels from the Austrian manufacturer Stockinger with natural yeasts. The young wine is then allowed to mature in the barrel until the following autumn before it is released on September 1st together with the Große Gewächse. The result is an estate wine that is unparalleled in its density and aromatic intensity:

Cool and transparent, quite firm, bright citrus nose with fresh herbal and herbaceous aromas, floral hints and a hint of minerality in the background. Refined, fine-juiced, again bright, transparent and cool fruit, very fine, lively acidity and delicate grip, herbaceous-plant notes, a hint of floral and red berry in the background, very elegant style, quite distinct minerality, energetic, very good, cool, crisp finish with drive.

Complex aroma with yellow fruit notes of ripe mirabelle plums, some pear, red-cheeked apples and fine herbal citrus freshness reminiscent of grapefruit and ginger, with a smoky-mineral undertone. On the palate, the wine presents itself as focused and stony, with radiant acidity and a pronounced mineral backbone from the old vines, with a long, complex finish. Typically 2023, the old vines also offer great drinking pleasure this year, even now. If you can resist, put a few bottles aside in the cellar and give them some time to unfold their full potential. Even though it is already promising, we are dealing with a long-distance runner here, who only hints at its great potential and will reach its true form in the coming years!

über: Van Volxem Old Vines Riesling dry 2023
"Van Volxem Alte Reben Riesling dry 2023 is, in terms of price-performance ratio, one of the best Rieslings I know! For less than €20, you get an exceptionally complex Riesling with excellent aging potential, which can easily compete with many much more expensive Große Gewächse!"

Return and Refund

If you notice a corky taste, please keep the cork and contact us. After making arrangements, you can then send the cork to our address in Saarburg. We will investigate the case, inform the winery, and then replace the affected bottle for you.

Should the wine arrive damaged upon delivery, please contact us immediately. We will clarify the damage with UPS and either arrange a replacement delivery for you or issue you a credit.

If the UPS tracking stops and your delivery is lost, we will initiate an investigation to resolve the problem. Please do not hesitate to contact us in this case.

If your delivery contains the wrong wine, please contact us directly. Please let us know which wine is missing and which one was delivered instead. We will then arrange for the correct wine to be sent and discuss with you whether you would like to return the incorrect bottle or keep it, for which we will gladly make you an offer.

The clear crystals in your wine are tartrate crystals. These crystals form through the crystallization of potassium bitartrate, a natural component of wine that can form during the aging process. Tartrate crystals are completely harmless and do not affect the taste or quality of the wine. You can simply let the crystals settle and pour carefully, or remove them by decanting.
