Van Volxem Altenberg Alte Reben Riesling Großes Gewächs 2023 is one of those Saar Riesling GG wines that evoke Burgundy and promise great drinking pleasure early on, but also have considerable aging potential!
The plot with ancient, partly still root-stock Riesling vines in the southeast-facing Kanzemer Altenberg has been owned by the winery since 2002 and was initially extensively restored over several years. But the work has paid off, because the dramatically steep slate wall located directly on the old arm of the Saar and with a slope of up to 70%, opposite Kanzem, with its deep red Devonian slate soil and significantly warmer average temperatures, regularly produces some of the most Burgundian wines of the Saar! Even in a very cool year like 2021, in which the grape harvest, as before, extended far into November, the grapes ripened fully here and once again delivered the most powerful and silky-fine Van Volxem GG:
Clear and very cool, bright citrus-peach nose with herbaceous-plant nuances, a hint of smoke, yeast, certain minerality and a hint of yellow spice. Bright, juicy, tart fruit, nutty-yeasty hints, again a little yellow spice and plant notes, delicate grip, persistent on the palate, salty minerality, a little smoke in the background, a hint of white pepper, very slight plant spiciness, nutty traces, persistent, not yet fully developed, very good, firm finish with a hint of dark berries.
The Montrachet of the Saar! Like the most famous of all white wines from Burgundy, this elixir of Riesling enters the stage aristocratically and yet fiery-vivaciously, coating every corner of your palate with lingering echoes. The terroir of the barren, grey scree of this dramatically steep slate wall and the ripest grapes of each year result in a wine that seems almost athletic in its perfect harmony with a never-ending finish! On the nose, alongside white pepper, the intense and invigorating aroma of perfectly ripe vineyard peaches, cherries and plums dominates. Thanks to its homeopathic low yield, the Altenberg possesses a wonderfully subtle extract sweetness that gives it a demanding depth and greatness.
Charming aroma of ripe peach, mirabelle plum, and candied citrus fruits with hints of star fruit, distinctly herbal nuances of anise, ginger, white pepper, and a touch of vanilla, as well as a subtle smoky slate note. On the palate, thanks to the cool 2021 vintage, surprisingly fresh and crisp for Altenberg, with fine extract sweetness, a smooth, opulent mouthfeel, salty slate minerality, and a great balance reminiscent of great Burgundies, with an aromatic aftertaste.

With a little ventilation, it's already a lot of fun and will ripen wonderfully!"

The clear crystals in your wine are tartrate crystals. These crystals form through the crystallization of potassium bitartrate, a natural component of wine that can form during the aging process. Tartrate crystals are completely harmless and do not affect the taste or quality of the wine. You can simply let the crystals settle and pour carefully, or remove them by decanting.
