About the wine

Van Volxem Geisberg Riesling Großes Gewächs 2023 - A great dry Riesling from the amphitheater of the Saar!

The Ockfener Geisberg is truly a legendary vineyard. It's practically an extension of the Ockfener Bockstein, but due to its unique soil structure and excellent water supply, it's considered one of the best vineyards in the Saar region. Once, the best producers of the time cultivated this vineyard, and the wines produced here achieved top prices at auctions, making them among the most expensive wines in the world, comparable to the fine wines from the famous Scharzhofberg. After the end of the 1980s, this cool location was increasingly abandoned because it is susceptible to frost, extremely steep, and therefore difficult to cultivate. It took a visionary like Roman Niewodniczanski of the Van Volxem winery to revive this unique terroir. Since 2022, Van Volxem has held a monopoly on the 12-hectare area, including 2 hectares of old vines. After selective hand-picking, the fully ripe grapes are checked again on a sorting table before pressing, because only the very best, flawless grapes are then briefly crushed and gently pressed after a short maceration period. After fermentation in large Stockinger-style barrels made from Eifel oak, the wine matures on the fine lees until bottling in November of the following year.

Youthful, delicate, light and slightly fresh-vegetable and floral nose with fine yellow fruit aromas, yeasty nuances, a hint of smoke, fine aromatic herbs, peach skin and a certain shell-like minerality. Clear, cool, fresh, tart, very light fruit again, lively acidity, clearly vegetal aromas, good persistence, a lot of salty and chalky minerality, again shell-like notes, fine vegetable tones, a certain depth, very good, tart, firm and cool finish.

Quite profound nose, ripe citrus fruit, very clear, fine herbal notes, stony, cold smoke, delicate dark berry hints. Super mineral, firm and juicy on the palate, dense and powerful with excellent acidity and top length. 93+P

Appealing aroma with yellow fruit notes of peach, pear and citrus fruits, also hints of quince and white currants with pronounced floral and herbal notes, yeasty hints and dark berry nuances reminiscent of blackcurrant. On the palate, the wine presents itself as fine and very firm with present acidity, fine tannin bite, pronounced mineral notes and a long, juicy finish. Great potential!

über: Van Volxem Geisberg Riesling Grand Cru 2023
"Van Volxem's Geisberg Riesling GG 2023 currently appears extremely youthful and needs some time in the glass to open up. The wine is incredibly dense and firm, has bite and the best potential for great development in the coming years. This wine is a real treat for all who appreciate dry Riesling wines and impressively showcases the origin and great terroir of my home vineyard - Ockfener Bockstein!"

We will then arrange for the correct wine to be sent and discuss with you whether you would like to return the incorrect bottle or keep it, for which we will gladly make you an offer.

The clear crystals in your wine are tartrate crystals. These crystals form through the crystallization of potassium bitartrate, a natural component of wine that can form during the aging process. Tartrate crystals are completely harmless and do not affect the taste or quality of the wine. You can simply let the crystals settle and pour carefully, or remove them by decanting.
