About the Dr. Wagner Winery
The Dr. Wagner winery is located in Beurig, a district of Saarburg, close to Saarburg railway station. Here, Josef Heinrich Wagner founded the winery as a wine and sparkling wine cellar in 1880 and had the winery's headquarters built: an imposing Gründerzeit villa amidst park grounds. Beneath the building extends the largest vaulted cellar on the Saar. The cellar, huge and ultra-modern for its time, offers space for over 100 oak casks and also has ground-level access to the railway tracks. This meant that, in the past, sparkling wine base wines could be delivered by train and aged at the winery, and the produced goods could be transported directly by rail to customers worldwide. Thus, over the decades, the winery gained an excellent reputation with its Saar-typical refreshing wine and sparkling wine creations and became a member of the Großer Ring VDP.Mosel-Saar-Ruwer e.V. in 1996. The winery owns 7 hectares of Riesling vineyards in the top sites of Saarburger Rausch, Saarburger Kupp, and Ockfener Bockstein, which are characterized by their high average vine age of over 45 years. This means the winery could practically label every bottling with "Alte Reben" (Old Vines). It is noteworthy that all vines are cultivated in the traditional Mosel single-post training system (heart shape). Furthermore, in 2019, the monopolistic Saarburger Laurentius vineyard, with ungrafted vines over 100 years old, was leased. Due to the narrow row spacing and the traditional training method, all vineyard work, such as pruning, plant protection, and of course harvesting, is carried out manually by hand.
"100% steep slopes, 100% single-post training, 100% old vines, 100% traditional fuder barrels, 100% Riesling, 100% manual labor!"
After internships at famous wineries on the Moselle and in the Rheingau, young Christiane Wagner joined her parents' winery in 2009 with a viticulture degree from the renowned Geisenheim University. By 2011, at just under 30, she had already taken over overall responsibility for the estate. Since then, she has been running the traditional business in its 5th generation, which she took as an opportunity to name her first wine "Generation V". This mineral-rich, off-dry Riesling perfectly reflects the winery's light-footed style. This innovation was not to be the last. Subsequently, the winemaker created a top-quality, off-dry Riesling, named "Josef Heinrich" after the winery's founder. A slightly fruitier, dry version with a pink label called "Mathilde" quickly joined the classic Saar Riesling Brut sparkling wine. Thus, on the one hand, the great tradition of the house is omnipresent, but on the other hand, the animal-loving winemaker cleverly combines tradition and modernity with targeted innovations, such as a new vinotheque in the estate park. After work, she enjoys her animals, who have found a spacious and beautiful home in the estate park. A horse, two dogs, a number of ducks, chickens, sheep, and even two peacocks almost give the impression of a lovingly curated petting zoo, which underlines the romantic flair of the park.
"Light-footed Rieslings with elegant fruit aromas and low alcohol content"
In the spacious vaulted cellar, a spring emerges, pushing through the brittle slate rock, flowing through the entire cellar, and thus providing a constantly cool climate with high humidity - ideal for the aging of delicate, fruity Saar Rieslings! In autumn, the harvested grapes are pressed whole and then left to "settle" overnight in clarification tanks. Through natural sedimentation, solids sink to the bottom of the tank, allowing the clear must above to be drained by gravity into traditional 1,000-liter oak barrels. In the Mosel Fuder barrels, the must is fermented slowly and gently, resulting in Riesling wines that develop an animating fruit aroma of citrus and stone fruit notes, extending to delicate floral nuances. They are particularly characterized by their extremely low alcohol content and high digestibility. The wines bring great joy in their youth and are a true refreshment, especially on warm sunny days! Due to their crisp acidity and fine minerality, they also possess excellent aging potential and can mature splendidly for decades.
