All Saar wines

Saar wines , characterized by the unique terroir of the Saar region, are a true treasure among German wines. The Saar, a tributary of the Moselle, creates a microclimate that offers ideal conditions for viticulture. Here, where steep slopes, slate soils and cool winds combine into a harmonious unity, wines of unparalleled elegance and finesse are created.

In Germany, Saar wine refers to the quality wine produced on the lower Saar River, which belongs to the Mosel wine-growing region in Rhineland-Palatinate. Until spring 2007, the wine-growing region was called " Mosel-Saar-Ruwer ", since then only "Mosel". This decision was made at that time for marketing reasons by a majority decision of the winemakers themselves. The umbrella brand Mosel is simply easier to market internationally than the former name Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, which is difficult for foreigners to pronounce and remember. So don't be surprised if the bottles say Mosel and not Saar.

Everything you need to know about Saar wine.
The outstanding characteristic of Saar wine is its minerality, which is shaped by the slate soils. This unique soil structure gives the wines a striking freshness and a fine, well-balanced acidity. The Saar is particularly known for its Rieslings, which impress with their precise fruitiness and delicate structure. But other grape varieties, such as Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris or Pinot Noir, also thrive here magnificently and contribute to a multifaceted range of wines.
The relatively cool climate delays the ripening process, allowing the Riesling vine to reach its full maturity even into November with a relatively high proportion of natural fruit acids, even without the formation of a high sugar content. The Riesling wines from the Saar region are therefore particularly long-lasting and rarely have an alcohol content of more than 12% vol.
Along the Saar River, traditional craftsmanship is combined with modern viticultural methods in the wineries. The winemakers cultivate their vineyards with great dedication and focus on sustainable farming methods. The result is wines with strong character that make the terroir of the Saar region tangible in every sip. Immerse yourself in the world of Saar wine, let yourself be inspired by its uniqueness, and discover the diverse aromas that this special wine region has to offer. Saar wine is more than just a drink – it's a journey through the fascinating landscape and history of the Saar region.
Saar wines
Saar wines are produced downstream in the wine-growing communities of Serrig, Saarburg, Ockfen, Ayl, Schoden, Wiltingen, Kanzem, Wawern and Filzen along the main river course. Furthermore, a large side valley, the so-called Konzer Tälchen, extends between Wiltingen and Konz. In this dried-up meander of the former Moselle, some of the most exciting Saar wines are now cultivated in the wine-growing communities of Oberemmel, Krettnach, Niedermennig and Obermennig. A total of around 800 hectares are mainly planted with Riesling vines, usually on steep slopes with up to 55 degrees inclination. The region accounts for less than 1 percent of the German vineyard area, yet the Rieslings produced here are undoubtedly among the best wines in the world. This is due to the exceptional climatic and soil conditions in the lower Saar valley. In addition to the climatic conditions, it is above all the Devonian slate on which the vines grow that gives Saar wine its unmistakable character. Experts count the Riesling wines produced here among the greatest white wines in the world. In addition, grape varieties such as Spätburgunder, Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder and Auxerrois are also cultivated.

Saarland wine
Saarland wine is grown on the Upper Moselle, and Saar wine comes from Rhineland-Palatinate – a paradox that is not easy to understand at first glance. Until the 1960s, viticulture was still practiced, albeit on a very small scale, on the Saarland part of the Saar around Ensdorf. Today, Saarland wine comes exclusively from the Saarland part of the Upper Moselle on the Luxembourg border. Saar wine, on the other hand, is grown between Serrig and Konz in the Rhineland-Palatinate section of the Saar River.
