About the Piedmont winery
The Piedmont winery is located in Filzen, a small wine village on the lower Saar River, just before the Saar's confluence with the Moselle near Konz. The Piedmont family has cultivated vineyards here since 1846, and the fifth generation, Claus Piedmont and his daughter Sitta, now manage the estate. The winery is housed in a lovingly restored old monastery building from 1698, belonging to the Trier Benedictine Abbey of St. Maximin. This impressive Baroque building boasts various function rooms and opulent salons and has hosted many memorable celebrations and wine events. The Saar-Riesling Summer of 2015 is particularly memorable – a completely successful event that lasted until the early morning hours! Directly behind the house, the best vineyard in the village, Filzener Pulchen, adjoins the property, which is the sole possession of the winery. Here, the Piedmonts cultivate 2.5 hectares of Riesling and Pinot Blanc in the heart of the Pulchen, whose name comes from the Latin word "pulcher," meaning "beautiful vineyard." In this south-facing, VDP-certified Große Lage monopole vineyard, the vines grow on slopes up to 85% on rocky, blue Devonian slate soil. This is where the winery's top wines are produced: Pulchen Riesling Kabinett, Spätlese, and, depending on the vintage, an Auslese. Piedmont's Pulchen Großes Gewächs is also produced here, and the 2018 vintage was awarded the Riesling Cup 2020 by the gourmet magazine "Feinschmecker." The excellent Pinot Blanc also grows in the Pulchen. Furthermore, the Piedmonts cultivate vines in the Filzener Urbelt, whose grapes, grown on deep, water-rich blue slate soils, form the basis for the Filzener Ortswein. Piedmont's estate wines come from grapes from the two vineyards Niedermenniger Sonnenberg and Niedermenniger Herrenberg in the "Konzer Tälchen."

"Traditional winemaking like in the old days"

In the vineyard, the father-daughter team relies on traditional farming methods. A large proportion of the total 3.5 hectares of vineyard area is planted with old vines, which makes manual work indispensable. 90% of the vineyard area is planted with Riesling, 10% with Pinot Blanc. After a long growing season of up to 140 days between flowering and harvest, the ripe grapes are selectively harvested by hand in autumn, then brought whole to the press and pressed directly. Afterwards, the must is allowed to settle overnight in a stainless steel tank to separate it from sediment and then transferred to the wooden barrel cellar for fermentation. Here they may...
then the natural yeasts do their work and the wine spontaneously ferments in traditional 1,000l Mosel-Fuder barrels.

"The perfect Pinot Blanc to accompany classic asparagus with brown butter!"

Year after year, approximately 20,000 bottles of Saar wine are produced here, distributed across a portfolio of four to five wines, predominantly in the dry and semi-sweet taste range. The focus is on the Kabinett range, as the Piedmonts strive for light, fruit-emphasized Saar wines in which a subtle, "serving" residual sweetness is welcome. As an alternative to the house's sparkling Rieslings, the Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc) should be highlighted, which, with its comparatively low alcohol content and pleasantly mild acidity, is an ideal accompaniment, for example, to asparagus prepared in the classic way with brown butter.
