What are the 6 German predicate levels called?
The six German Prädikatsstufen (quality levels) represent the pinnacle of quality categories in German viticulture. These classifications reflect not only the ripeness of the grapes, but also the quality and character of the wines. Here are the names of the six German Prädikatsstufen:

1. Cabinet:
As an introduction to the world of predicate wines, the Kabinett stands for lightness and freshness. These wines are characterized by their balanced acidity and subtle sweetness.

2. Late harvest:
The term "Spätlese" (late harvest) refers to wines whose grapes are harvested late in the season. These wines impress with their ripe fruitiness and a balanced sweetness.

3. Selection:
The "Auslese" (selection) includes wines for which only the best grapes are selected during harvesting. The result is concentrated aromas and a noble sweetness.

4. Berry selection:
These wines are made from individually selected, noble rot-affected berries. The selected berries impress with their intense sweetness and complex flavor nuances.

5. Selected dry berries:
The Trockenbeerenauslese is the highest quality level and stands for exceptional wines that are made from fully ripe, often noble-rot-affected berries. These wines impress with their intense sweetness and impressive complexity.

6. Ice wine:
Ice wine is made from frozen grapes, which leads to a natural concentration of sugar and aromas. These wines are known for their sweet elegance.
What is the difference between quality wine and predicate wine?
The main difference between Qualitätswein (quality wine) and Prädikatswein (premium wine) lies in the fact that Qualitätswein may be chaptalized, while Prädikatswein may not. This means that sugar may be added to Qualitätswein during fermentation to increase the alcohol content by a maximum of 1.5% vol. This is not permitted for Prädikatswein, which is why they were often labeled "natural" in the past. While both categories represent high-quality wines, there are further differences regarding grape ripeness, taste, and production methods.

1. Quality wine:
Quality wine forms the basis of the German wine classification and stands for wines made from fully ripe grapes. These wines are subject to strict quality standards and are further subdivided into regional wine, village wine, and estate wine, with origin and growing region playing an important role.

2. Predicate wine:
In contrast, Prädikatswein represents the top class of German winemaking. These wines are classified according to six Prädikatsstufen (predicates), including Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Eiswein, and Trockenbeerenauslese. The classification is based on the ripeness of the grapes and reflects the quality and specific characteristics of the wines.
What is meant by predicate wine?
Prädikatswein represents the highest level of quality classification in German viticulture and stands for wines of exceptional quality. The term "Prädikat" refers to the special distinction awarded to wines based on their origin, grape ripeness, and quality. This classification comprises six Prädikats levels, each with its own characteristics and quality standards. From Kabinett, Spätlese, and Auslese to the noble Prädikatsweins Beerenauslese, Eiswein, and Trockenbeerenauslese, each level reflects the ripeness of the grapes and thus the character of the wine.
What quality levels of wine are there?
In the fascinating world of wine, there are different quality levels that define the character and quality of a wine. The classification varies depending on the country of origin, with Germany having a particularly differentiated system. In Germany, wine quality is divided into two main categories: Qualitätswein and Prädikatswein. Qualitätsweine form the basis and are further subdivided into Gebietswein, Ortswein, and Gutswein, with origin playing a crucial role. The highest quality level in Germany is Prädikatswein. This category comprises six Prädikatsstufen (quality levels), including Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Eiswein, and Trockenbeerenauslese. Each level represents a specific degree of ripeness of the grapes and offers unique flavor nuances.
Why predicate wine?
Prädikatswein - the highest distinction in German viticulture, stands for unparalleled quality and the finest taste experiences. So why Prädikatswein?

1.
Highest quality and ripeness:
Prädikatsweine are made from optimally ripened grapes, which are carefully and selectively harvested. This focus on ripeness and quality gives the wines their unique complexity and depth.

2.
Unique variety of flavors:
The six quality levels, ranging from Kabinett to Trockenbeerenauslese, offer an impressive range of flavor profiles. Each level reflects not only the ripeness of the grapes, but also the individual characteristics of the wine.

3.
Tradition and craftsmanship:
The production of Prädikatsweine (premium quality wines) requires the highest level of craftsmanship and attention to detail. Winemakers rely on centuries-old traditions to produce wines of exceptional quality and finesse.

4.
Unique terroir expression:
Prädikatsweine (premium quality wines) carry the essence of their growing area, the so-called terroir, within them. The soil, the climate and the location shape the wine and give it an unmistakable personality.

5.
For special occasions:
A glass of Prädikatswein is more than just a drink – it's an experience. These wines are ideally suited for special occasions and celebratory moments where enjoyment and exclusivity take center stage.
How long is Prädikatswein (wine with a quality designation) shelf-stable?
Generally, predicate wines are characterized by their high quality, structure, and aging potential. Well-made wines of all predicate levels can mature excellently over years and decades, gaining in aromatic complexity. Previously, this aging potential was only attributed to the noble sweet predicates Auslese, Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese, and Eiswein, with the belief that Spätlese and especially Kabinett should be consumed within the first 3-10 years. However, this is not the case! Well-made Kabinett and Spätlese wines can easily age for 20 years or more. The key to optimal shelf life lies in proper storage. Predicate wines benefit from a constant temperature, preferably between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius, and high humidity. A dark, quiet place without strong temperature fluctuations is ideal for long-term storage. It is important to note that the shelf life of predicate wine depends heavily on the individual winemaking process, the grape variety, and the storage conditions. In any case, however, storing predicate wines offers the opportunity to experience an amazing development of flavor and to celebrate wine enjoyment at the highest level.
